Review

"Grimy, gritty reality occasionally spills over into unintelligible hypercomplexity, but this spectacularly, intricately paranoid yarn is worth the effort." (starred review)

"If Philip K. Dick and Raymond Chandler's love child were raised by Franz Kafka, the writing that emerged might resemble China Miéville's new novel, THE CITY & THE CITY....[The book] is an unabashed love letter to the diversity, polyglot sprawl, complexities, contradictions, pitfalls, humanity and streetlife of the metropolis. It's also studded with Miéville's inventive vocabulary."

"Miéville's novel is...unorthodox, taking readers outside the box, off the flat paper that box is drawn on, and into fantastic realms where we learn how to see what we have been taught to unsee, hear what we have been taught to unhear, and let ourselves know things we have been taught to ignore."

"Mieville offers an outstanding take on police procedurals....[He] skillfully examines the illusions people embrace to preserve their preferred social realities." (starred review)

"An excellent police procedural and a fascinating urban fantasy, this is essential reading for all mystery and fantasy fans." (starred review)

Publisher's note

"New York Times" bestselling author China Mieville delivers his most accomplished novel yet, an existential thriller set in an enthralling city that is unlike any other--real or imagined
When the body of a murdered woman is found in the extraordinary, decaying city of Beszel, somewhere at the edge of Europe, it looks like a routine case for Inspector Tyador Borlu of the Extreme Crime Squad. But as he probes, the evidence begins to point to conspiracies far stranger, and more deadly, than anything he could have imagined. Soon his work puts him and those he cares for in danger.
Borlu must travel to the only metropolis on Earth as strange as his own, across a border like no other. It is a journey as psychic as it is physical, a shift in perception, a seeing of the unseen, a journey to Beszel's equal, rival, and intimate neighbor, the rich and vibrant city of Ul Qoma.
With shades of Kafka and Philip K. Dick, Raymond Chandler and "1984, The City & The City" is a murder mystery taken to dazzling metaphysical and artistic heights.

Annotation

China Mieville is more of a literary architect than an author--the worlds he constructs emerge into stubborn existence within our own, lurking in the liminal spaces between perception and imagination, appearing in flickers just before we blink our eyes or catch our breath. This is what life must be like for the citizens of the twin cities at the heart of THE CITY & THE CITY, Mieville's first foray into the cognitive depths of detective fiction. In Mieville's fantastic reality, two European cities, Beszel and Ul Qoma, share a border--that is, they inhabit the same physical borders, but the mental blindness of each city's citizens keeps the other hidden, and it is an illegal act to traverse this threshold without permission from the Breach, an illicit security organization. A murder in Beszel forces Inspector Tyador Borlú to cross over into Ul Qoma, and his investigative journey soon brings him into contact with forces which would see the cities separated, and those who seek unification, but it is never clear which is the more preferable option. But the secrets needed to solve the murder and repair the mesh between the cities may lie in the dreaded space between the two, the dividing blur in focus where all sense of permanence dissolves and anything seems possible.
