Chinese pianist Lang Lang's dramatically demonstrative, intensely physical performances have made his every new release an event in the classical music world. Frederic Chopin's youthful piano concertos--he wrote them at the age of 20--are replete with exactly the kind of highly charged, emotionally fraught, virtuosity-laden music that Lang thrives on. The liner notes feature an interview with the pianist, providing insight into his approach to performing the music of Chopin. Lang mentions feeling an organic and instinctive, almost improvisational, connection to the music, having played the composer's works since the age of five. In his performances of the piano concertos, he tempers the characteristics that have made him famous with a less overtly romantic, more classical approach, to accentuate Chopin's exquisite sense of balance. Zubin Mehta, whose bold style complements Lang's colorful interpretations, conducts the estimable Vienna Philharmonic.
