With the fourth installment in the Industrial Fucking Strength series, Chillin Is Killin, Lenny Dee packs 36 hardcore techno tracks into the two-disc set. The "Chillin" disc starts with the ethereal and moody atmospherics of Brown Starr's "Floating Hot Snake" and then carries the ambient industrial groove seamlessly through the entire set -- DJ Demigod's porn track "Ripper's Dawn," Tocsin's hypnotic "Vanity," the clamor of DJ Demigod's "Alley Love," and NADA's thumping, destructive "Earthquake," for example. Fans of the genre will be pleased by the sonic creativity and Dee's seamless editing of the tracks, but those unfamiliar with industrial techno are likely to find the "Chillin" tracks either caustic or laughable, but hardly relaxing like an accessible downtempo collection. And for the "Killin" side, Dee pieces together a similar, but more beat-driven, evil grind. Don't expect anything too danceable though. Tracks like Pivot vs. DxPxCx's "Spark" sound as cacophonous as KMFDM's "What Do You Know, Deutschland?" but less experimental and inventive. The noise is represented here in full force, but the industrial and techno of the "Killin" side of IFS4 can't compete with the vision of forward-thinking, avant-garde noisemakers like the Mego label, Jim O'Rourke, Black Dice, and Gang Gang Dance. ~ Charles Spano
