Title Note

Ello Riso, he of the Defected dance series, has put together a 14-track sampling of the Argentine underground phenomenon known as chillout. From the evidence of this collection, chillout is merely a laid-back branch of electronica -- smooth, usually broadly-paced, drawn-out, repetitive, rhythm-computer-driven grooves that mostly cannot be tied to any particular nationality. Riso's (with R@F) "Quiet Breath" lays down a most seductive opening groove with electric piano, vibraphone and a digitally delayed electronic signature motif. Tracks like South Connexion's "Exp Dub," Alas' "Tendance," 3 Funk's "Goodbye" and Opal's "Thinking From the Hill" are mildly flavored by acid jazz rhythmic ideas, while Dual Session's "Inside Out" channels some funk. At one point, the distinctive harmonies of Caetano Veloso's songwriting style break through the minimalist trance in Lomo de Burro's take on "Luz Do Sol," with vocals by Mariana. Yet even this Brazilian-slanted selection doesn't sound terribly out of place in this collection which, given the interconnected society we live in, could have been recorded almost anywhere on the globe. And it goes down easily, fluidly. ~ Richard S. Ginell
