Review

Entertainment Weekly (No. 761, p.83) - "[T]he range of [Gentry's] ARTISTRY--waltzes, sexy ballads, chamber pop, tripped-out protest music, and more--is astonishing." - Rating: A-
Dirty Linen (p.85) - "[T]his collection offers a steamy, mysterious trip through the swamps of 60s Southern soulfulness."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.120) - "CHICKASAW COUNTY CHILD combines the best of her catalogue into a single, definitive disc."

Title Note

Includes liner notes by Holly George-Warren.

Shockingly, before this disc's 2004 release, not one comprehensive US compilation of Bobbie Gentry's work existed. CHICKASAW COUNTY CHILD goes a long way toward redressing this injustice to Gentry's fascinating oeuvre. She's mainly known for her Tom T. Hall-meets-Edgar Allan Poe story-song "Ode to Billie Joe," but that's merely the tail of the comet. Schooled in music theory, Gentry had both a complex understanding of harmony and melody, and a gift for earthy-but-literate lyrics, and she followed her muse far and wide. There's the gritty, Tony Joe White-like country-funk of "Mississippi Delta," the Fred Neil-via-Laura Nyro folk/jazz/blues amalgam "Hurry, Tuesday Child," and the Brian Wilson-worthy orchestrated art-pop of "Penduli Pendulum." And let's not forget the Randy Newman-echoing mordant satire "Casket Vignette" and the trippy folk of "Refractions," two more remarkable songs presented on this abundance of riches.
