Review

Q (3/00, p.116) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...purely for the romantic, with the Oklahoma jazzman offering soft-breeze trumpet and cool...vocals on evergreens that are gorgeous...with arrangements that seem designed solely for Sunday afternoon listening."

Product note

Personnel includes: Chet Baker (vocals, trumpet).
Recorded in Milan, Italy in October 1959. Originally released on Jazzland (921). Includes liner notes by Peter Drew.
Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1990, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
If you're a romantic with a yen for lush and dreamy music, WITH FIFTY ITALIAN STRINGS is the album for you. Chet Baker's trumpet soliloquizes over the aforementioned strings in carefree yet deliberate phrases. His voice glides smoothly and effortlessly over the legato accompaniment, while the arrangements are never too dense, weighty or dramatic.
Very few jazz musicians have the ability to capture love and loss like Baker. On "Goodbye," the music becomes a slow dirge, with the trumpeter leading the procession; it's as if he's eulogizing his own heartbreak with sudden flourishes and tearful long tones. However, the pangs of love are best represented on "Deep In a Dream," where Baker likens his loneliness to a cigarette burning his fingers. "My hand doesn't hurt, but there's pain in my heart," he croons. WITH FIFTY ITALIAN STRINGS features Baker in a tranquil and cozy setting. Midtempo tunes such as "The Song Is You," round out the album with blissful, sunny lyrics. Saxophones, trombones, harp, flute and oboe also add color to the set's texture and mood.
