Title Note

The Elms: Owen Thomas (vocals); Thomas Daugherty (guitar); Nathan Bennett (bass guitar); Chris Thomas (drums).

Recording information: 2006.

Straightforward guitar rock and raw, heartfelt lyrics combine to make THE CHESS HOTEL a unique album on the Christian Contemporary market. The directness and urgency to which The Elms aspire is also emphasized in the production, which avoids making the band sound overly slick. THE CHESS HOTEL shows the influence of 1960s and '70s classic rock, rechannelled to tell about life in small Midwestern towns. Imagine a born-again Urge Overkill (if you dare), and you're not too far off.

The band, which hails from Indiana, is thoughtful about religion without being preachy. The songs, especially the title track and "The Tower and The Trains," are as focused on the hardships and lack of opportunity in small-town America as they are on more specifically religious topics. And the fact that they churn these ideas into rowdy, uncompromising barroom rock could potentially make them a hit among all audiences.
