With their close-cropped hair, matching outfits and two-man horn section, the Supertones might seem contrived for the sake of joining in on the California punk-ska trend. Closer inspection of CHASE THE SUN, however, reveals that they have a real feeling for the style. The raging punk power chords, horn stabs, herky-jerky rhythms and propulsive organ stabs might be de rigeur for the genre, but the songs are all delivered with feeling and a winning geniality, no matter the intensity of the performance. While they won't make anyone forget the Skatalites, the Supertones at least show enough sense of history to recall the Specials rather than Rancid.
