Product note

The Chas McDevittt Skiffle Group with the diminutive Nancy Whiskey on vocals was one of the four major skiffle acts of the British '50s (the others being Lonnie Donegan, the Vipers, and Johnny Duncan). The group met with almost instant success in the UK and USA with "Freight Train," although follow-up attempts met with little or no commercial success. Whiskey's successor Shirley Douglas eventually married McDevitt and continued to record with him long after the Skiffle Group's inevitable demise. For the first time on one album here are all of the McDevitt Group's Oriole label recordings featuring both aforementioned songstresses.
Skiffle was hot in 1957 and this is the real thing "Every Day Of The Week" which advises the acquisition of at least five girlfriends simultaneously (" two might leave you, the other three may die"), the bluesy "Sportin' Life" and "Freight Train" are basically what skiffle was all about: women, hard luck and trains Its popularity meant that budget labels like Woolworth's Embassy imprint would also release cheaper unnamed artist cover versions of the current skiffle successes. And who do we have covering "Freight Train" and others by Donegan and the Vipers but McDevitt himself All essential skiffling. All here
