Comets On Fire drummer Utrillo Kushner formed this side project as a frontman, centering his songs on the piano with vocal melodies significantly sweeter than those of his other group. CHARLEMAGNE'S BIG THAW is a deceptively simple affair, based on time-tested pop arrangements but imbued with a quirkiness (and in the case of the title track, even an occasional earthy twang) that owes itself to Flying Nun acts like The Clean as much as to cult American songwriters like Alex Chilton. In its finest moments, BIG THAW melts down its formula, reaches for musical uplift by way of earnest lyrics, and is surprisingly affecting.
