Review

Clash (magazine) (p.108) - "CHANGES NEAR is a wonderful blend of '60s pop and psych-rock....The title track is a raga epic with sitar-like guitars doing cosmic battle with a pedal steel."

Title Note

The Quarter After: Robert Campanella (vocals, acoustic guitar, hand claps); Dominic Campanella (vocals, acoustic guitar); Eric Heywood (pedal steel guitar); Dave Koenig (bass guitar); Nelson Bragg (drums).

Recording information: The Committee To Keep Music Evil Headquarters, Lake Hol.

While the L.A. band THE QUARTER AFTER could rightly be said to have a psychedelic sound (think poppier FIFTH DIMENSION-era Byrds or Love), but it forges its own path with the aid of surprising influences. On its second record (debut on the Committee to Keep Music Evil label), CHANGES NEAR, the trio incorporate the mellow, driving rock of Tom Petty, the pop focus of Teenage Fanclub, and the grooved earnestness of Matthew Sweet. The whole affair is tied together by harmonic vocals reminiscent of Crosby, Stills & Nash at their best. It's an appealing record that has its roots in the 1960's but seems to flow out to a spot beyond time.
