The Audition Artist Snapshot:

Chicago-based punk-popsters the Audition blend emo and guitar-driven, hook-heavy rock for a sound that finds them mentioned in the same breath as All-American Rejects and Fall Out Boy. After the group honed their chops over two EPs and a steady diet of touring, they released their debut, CONTROVERSY LOVES COMPANY, on Victory Records in 2005. The Audition has played dates with Mae, Silverstein, and Hit the Lights, among others, and has appeared at a number of festivals, including SXSW and the Warped Tour. Their sophomore release, entitled CHAMPION, arrived in 2008.

Review

Alternative Press (p.136) - 4.5 stars out of 5 -- "CHAMPION is a sublime exercise in power-pop songcraft, jam-packed with surprising melodic twists and turns..."
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.46) - "This time around, they're taking the pop-punk they've built they're name on, and adding elements, magpie-like, from other corners of the music world."
Q (Magazine) (p.95) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he quintet's second album is a sun-streaked tangle of punk, funk and positive vibes."

Title Note

After building a following via heavy-duty touring, a consistent web presence, and their debut full-length, CONTROVERSY LOVES COMPANY, Chicago rockers the Audition made a serious splash with their sophomore release, CHAMPION. Musically, the Audition aren't breaking any new ground here, but that's not the point, because CHAMPION is packed back to front with melodic rock songs with an edge. With its durable hooks and consistently taut energy, the album stands out from both punk-pop and alternative-rock carbon copies. CHAMPION is one of those albums that inspires you to crank up the volume on the car stereo and sing along loudly, while ripping into flamboyant air guitar solos.
