Meat Beat Manifesto Artist Snapshot:

A highly influential British industrial dance ensemble, Meat Beat Manifesto's musical and artistic vision has always been about sensory overload. From their sampledelic mix of beats and grooves to their multi-media visual-heavy live shows, MBM have been thrilling audiences since their inception at the dawn of the rave era in the late 1980s. Although the ensemble evolved right alongside the larger dance culture, their sound remained rooted in an experimental ethos and is both body-moving and ear-blasting. They continued to release records into the 2000s.

Review

JazzTimes (p.107) - "At once captivating and complex, sensual and sinister, AT THE CENTER is another jewel in Thirsty Ear's jazztronica crown."

Title Note

Meat Beat Manifesto: Jack Dangers (various instruments).

Additional personnel: Peter Gordon (flute); Craig Taborn (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Clavinet, Hammond b-3 organ); Dave King (drums, percussion).

An evocative, experimental album, AT THE CENTER is another ambitious outing from Meat Beat Manifesto, a band that has largely been the vehicle for multi-instrumentalist/composer/programmer/producer Jack Dangers. Those familiar with Meat Beat Manifesto's discography know Dangers's penchant for mixing genres and styles with edgy, daring aplomb. Previous releases have incorporated industrial, hip-hop, dub, electronica, and avant-noise; it seems only natural for Dangers to dabble in jazz.

His first release on Thirsty Ear's Blue Series (a series dedicated to futuristic jazz), Danger's turns in a textured, mind-tickling work that, while using large chunks of jazz vocabulary, also draws from stylistic elements of his earlier work. With help from Greg Taborn (keyboards), Dave King (drums), and Peter Gordon (flute), Dangers (who plays bass, bass flute, and bass clarinet, in addition to fashioning the ever-shifting soundscapes here) alights on a unique fusion music that sounds something like BITCHES BREW with a turntablist sitting in. Swirling grooves are offset by witty, unsettling vocal samples ("Want Ads One), dubby jazz-funk jams open spaces for Gordon's flute ("Blind"), and abstract post bop balladry is filtered through ambient sonics ("Murita Cycles"). With its unconventional, unclassifiable mixture of jazz aesthetics, top-notch musicianship, and futuristic production, AT THE CENTER intrigues and absorbs.
