CELTIC MEDITATIONS: INTO THE LIGHT presents the fine music of Maggie Sansone, an accomplished dulcimer player who interprets traditional Celtic music through an entirely contemporary sensibility. Here, she allows the hammered dulcimer to create cascading melodies with a dreamlike sound similar to a wind-up music box. This collection was compiled and mastered by Charlie Pilzer, responsible for engineering the landmark ANTHOLOGY OF AMERICAN FOLK MUSIC.

The CD is separated into four sets: the Lughnasa set, the Renaissance set, the Northumberland set, and the Samhain set, effectively framing the different strains of the Celtic vernacular. "Farewell to Nigg" features soprano saxophone and casts a mournful reflection evoking a bagpipe procession. The music really takes off during the lively "Mummer's March" and the fiddle of "Johnny Armstrong" rings with deep resonance. "Sergeant Early's Dream," one of the most gorgeous songs on the album, is an Irish reel played extremely slowly with a fretless bass. Maggie Sansone's celestial laments on the hammered dulcimer create a heavenly brightness, making a fitting tribute to the wealth of songs found within the Celtic tradition.
