Celtic Chillout is one of those discs that would benefit from a more fitting title. First of all, the chillout market that crested in the early 2000s had a lot more to do with trip-hop and ambient breakbeats than the soothing, ethnically tinged new age mood music featured here. While the majority of new age music is indeed suitable for chilling out to, associating it with a field that's normally reserved for the likes of Massive Attack and Everything but the Girl and all their descendants is wrongheaded (though some labels undoubtedly view it as a smart marketing move). Second of all, some of the songs covered here by Ryan and Rachel O'Donnell simply cannot be worked into any Celtic formatting (see "Sound of Silence" and "Scarborough Fair" for two of many instances). Taken for what it is, Celtic Chillout features soothing renditions of a broad range of songs, from Danny Elfman's "Good Will Hunting" theme to Enya's "Book of Days." However, discerning fans of Celtic new age will know to avoid this. ~ Andy Kellman
