Review

Rolling Stone (1/22/04, p.70) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Full of mellow, shambling indie rock..."
Entertainment Weekly (1/23/04, p.101) - "[A] well-conceived collection of odd pop songs with thoughtful lyrics about unusual subjects."
Magnet (2/04, p.112) - "Vanderslice's talent lies in his ability to balance his off-kilter production wanderings with the carefully determined moodiness of his songwriting."
CMJ (1/26/04, p.4) - "Marked by lush orchestration, the compositions wear transcendent layers of jangly guitars, rich string arrangements, brass flourishes, booming timpani and resounding bells...Vanderslice himself wears a crusty heart on his roughed-up sleeve throughout..."

Title Note

John Vanderslice's fourth album cemented his position as a notable figure in the early 2000s indie rock underground, after a notorious earlier single, "Bill Gates Must Die," came close to tagging him forever as a snarky one-semi-hit-wonder. Dialing back on the ornate (some might argue overstuffed) arrangements of his previous albums, Vanderslice puts the focus on his emotionally affecting lyrics and understated but powerful vocals throughout. Highlights include "They Won't Let Me Run" and "Promising Actress."
