Polvo Artist Snapshot:

One of the most popular and accomplished bands in the arty, noisy 1990s indie rock offshoot dubbed math rock, Polvo touched on many of the genre's hallmarks: dissonant, intricately layered guitars that often employed alternate tunings; odd, off-kilter rhythms; an emphasis on dense sonic texture; and unorthodox song structures that, nonetheless, were often unconventionally melodic. Additionally, their music had a pronounced Eastern feel that came not only from the Indian and Middle Eastern-style drones in their compositions, but actual Asian instruments as well. The combination helped set them apart from other post-Sonic Youth guitar experimentalists.

Review

Alternative Press (8/94, p.89) - "...further displays the pleasures of their elastic, twisting guitars and skewered song structures..."
Option (11-12/94, pp.136-138) - "...The tunes often change tempo, texture and topic within their distinctive sonic constructs, making for a challenging, difficult, but always exciting listen..."

Title Note

Polvo: Dave Brylawski, Ash Bowie (guitar, vocals); Steve Popson (bass); Eddie Watkins (drums).

Recorded at Duck Kee Studios, Raleigh, North Carolina.

Lest anyone think Polvo's previous outing, the relatively cohesive TODAY'S ACTIVE LIFESTYLES, was a sign of streamlining to come, CELEBRATE THE DARK AGE opens with the dizzying "Fractured (Like Chandeliers)," which sounds as if they kept the vocals and rhythm section at full speed but accidentally slowed down the guitars to a wobbly warp in the mixing session. Halfway through this strangely entrancing song, one starts to feel relieved that this is merely a seven-song EP. But as they always do, frontman Dave Brylawski and his bandmates balance out their fringier fits with comparative gentility, as "City Spirit" might be their most delicate (dare one say pretty) composition up to that point. That is CELEBRATE's primary feat: staying true to their original instincts but finding a pathway to a tunefulness that moved Polvo away from their Carolina cohorts and up the coast toward contemporaries like Yo La Tengo.
