Review

The Wire (7/02, p.55) - "...No holds barred, foot to the floor jazz fusion....You couldn't find three better practitioners....They know its every twist and turn of dramatic phrasing and pregnant pause..."

Title Note

Full performer name: Larry Coryell/Tom Coster/Steve Smith.

Personnel: Larry Coryell (guitar); Tom Coster (keyboards); Steve Smith (drums).

Additional personnel: Victor Wooten, Benny Reitveld (bass).

Recorded at Neverland Studio, Marin County, California on May 9-19, 1998.

Monster drummer Steve Smith leads another power trio session on CAUSE AND EFFECT. This time his cohorts are guitar pioneer Larry Coryell and Santana vet Tom Coster on keyboards. The emphasis here is on the energized fusion sound of the early '70s with such influences as the Tony Williams Lifetime and Miles Davis' electric period as their guide. The chops are flying fast and furious as these virtuosos tear through their grooves with wild abandon. The mixture of Coryell's distortion and Smith's enthusiastic pounding with Coster's ferocious B-3 work make for a rollicking ride that is not for the faint of heart.

The Hendrix-like opener "These Are Odd Times" is an intense trip that's followed by the heavy-handed "Plankton" for those who like their blues with an extra punch. Next, the trio launches into a dizzyingly brisk swing pace for "Wrong Is Right" before slamming into the funky "Bubba" with a vengeance. Later, the psychedelic "Night Visitors" takes a left turn into the comic "Miss Guided Missile" for an added twist. The closing "Finale: Wes And Jimi" is a fitting tribute to those who paved the way for generations of musicians to come.
