Review

Q (6/00, p.124) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Repeatedly shows he could pen the sweetest of folksy love ditties..."

Title Note

Personnel: Donovan Leitch (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Gypsy Dave (kazoo); Brian Locking (bass); Skip Alan (drums).

Producers: Terry Kennedy, Peter Eden, Geoff Stephens.

Originally released as WHAT'S BIN DID AND WHAT'S BEEN HID on NPL (18117).

Donovan's early singles are too easily dismissed by the phrase "The British Dylan." While that devastating scene in DON'T LOOK BACK--Donovan nervously plays one of his early tunes and Dylan casually borrows his guitar and shreds him with "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue"--lingers in the mind, an open-minded listen to CATCH THE WIND reveals these songs as occasionally slight but exceedingly charming folk-pop tunes.

The title track--included in two versions--is a minor mid-'60s masterpiece, of course, but what surprises with this well-sequenced, nicely-remastered reissue are lesser-known tunes like "Remember the Alamo," "Tangerine Puppet," and "Riding in My Car," which set the daffy faux-naivete of later hits like "Sunshine Superman" against British folk tunes, played simply and charmingly. Donovan may not have been the British Dylan--but the British Paul Simon? Maybe.
