Title Note

This intriguing release reveals a hidden face of Brazil -- even to Brazilians. Elomar is a contradictory character. An architect who was undergrad in major Brazilian cities, he chose to live in a minuscule location where he spent his days taking care of a handful of goats, at the same time researching the rich northeastern musical tradition, which ascends to the medieval European influences brought by successive waves of invaders, mixed with the indigenous popular culture (which already had Tupi Indian influences) that yielded intricate dialects, both musical and spoken language-wise. In 1984, Elomar and other important proponents of the northeastern culture (Xangai, Geraldo Azevedo, and Vital Farias) performed at the Teatro Castro Alves, Salvador, for a full house. The enthusiastically acclaimed show made it to the heading news and brought fame and recognition to this segment. This CD is the solo participation of Elomar in that show. (Cantoria 1 and Cantoria 2, all parts of the same whole, were released previously by Kuarup, counting with the participation of the other musicians). He sings and plays the acoustic guitar (violao). In both, the mesmerizing modal quality of those medieval influences coexist with the sophistication of a classically informed performer. The result is evidence of Brazil's cultural diversity. ~ Alvaro Neder
