Maze's popularity had been growing since the late 1970s, and '85's CAN'T STOP THE LOVE proved to be the band's breakthrough album. Thanks to the runaway single "Back in Stride," a funky number complete with pop bass, handclap track, and squiggly synth, the record reached the top slot on the R&B charts. "Too Many Games," the band's follow-up single, bemoans the complications between lovers over an equally slick, danceable groove.

The mid-tempo "I Want to Feel I'm Wanted," another charting hit, showcases Frankie Beverly's trademark vulnerability, both lyrically and vocally (Beverly's singing is reminiscent, in its seductive smoothness, to Marvin Gaye's style). Tender love ballads, always a Maze specialty, are also represented with the creamy melodies of "Reachin' Down Inside," and "A Place in My Heart," which closes out the set. Musically and commercially, CAN'T STOP THE LOVE confirms the success of the Maze's sonic formula.
