Review

Entertainment Weekly (p.p.66) - "[With] brightly produced anthemic laments....The piano-driven 'Fire' is a less epic affair that showcases the appealing vocals of singer Dan Layus." -- Grade: B
Paste (magazine) (p.65) - "[T]he standout track here is 'Meet You There.' With a bouncy beat, chugging percussion and a goose-bumpy chord progression, it almost seems like Augustana is having fun."

Title Note

Augustana: Dan Layus (vocals, guitars, piano); Chris Sachtleben (vocals, guitars); John Vincent (vocals, piano, organ, keyboards); Jared Palomar (vocals, bass guitar); Justin South (vocals, drums).

Thanks to its single "Boston," Augustana's 2005 debut, ALL THE STARS AND BOULEVARDS, received a fair bit of attention. The band's sophomore effort, CAN'T LOVE, CAN'T HURT, shows the quintet maturing into tasteful, rootsy pop-rock territory and showing off its grasp of melodic songcraft. Comparisons to Coldplay and Counting Crows come readily, but Augustana stand on its own merits, offering up surging, mid-tempo tracks like the single "Sweet and Low" and the lilting "I Still Ain't Over You,' (which is fleshed out beautifully with Byrds-like harmonies). Mellow, melodic, and pleasurable, CAN'T LOVE, CAN'T HURT is sweet, emotive rock tailor-made for lazy summer days.
