Barry White Artist Snapshot:

A giant both artistically and physically, Barry White had a basso profundo voice and lusty, soulful songs that are probably responsible for more procreation than a thousand fertility clinics. Songs like "Never Never Gonna Give You Up" and "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe" brought an epic, orchestral sensibility to R&B, and White was one of the musical bridges between soul and disco in the 1970s. While he had considerable chart success, White was not much of a critics' favorite. In subsequent decades, however, he came to be taken more seriously, and respected as a soul music giant. He even managed a comeback in the '90s before his death in 2003.

Review

Q (8/96, p.143) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...White in his mid-'70s prime....White's talent lay not just in his vocal style, the deep romantic rap and swooning choruses, but as a producer and arranger..."
Vibe (7/03, p.147) - "...CAN'T GET ENOUGH opens with the calming, almost cinematic 'Mellow Mood, Pt. 1,' a perfect showcase for White's compositional talent..."

Title Note

Digitally remastered by Gary N. Mayo.

The man with the world's sexiest voice took a lot of flak, and was often parodied by those who were not soul/disco fans. His fans thought differently, which made him one of the most successful acts of the 70s. For no apparent reason, in the 90s he suddenly became credible with the critics, and they were able fully to appreciate the quality of his Love Unlimited Orchestra, which gave substance to his supremely erotic songs of lurrve. The huge success of this album when first released was no fluke, and nearly 25 years later it holds up well against the new wave of smooth-talking soul singers.
