Synopsis

A brilliantly witty and ironic documentary about a very serious subject: the effects of human interference in the environmental chain.
Cane toads were brought to Australia in order to eat the indigenous pests that ruined local crops; unfortunately, they didn't manage to do that. The highly sexual creatures also reproduced without stop, and as the toads had no natural enemies there, they flourished. And flourished. Now they're overrunning the place, causing damage to everything, both man-made and natural -- and sometimes even endangering children and pets. So the frustrated residents are doing everything they can to get back at the toads, including squashing them with cars... at least those citizens who aren't erecting statues in honor of the animals.

Product Notes

When the cane toad was imported from Hawaii into Australia to help with the Greyback beetle problem, the fellows who masterminded the experiment soon found that they had made a major mistake. While it is true that cane toads will eat the beetles, it is incredibly hard for them to catch any, seeing as the beetles can easily fly away whenever a toad approaches. So, the toads, without any natural predators quickly multiplied and have been a bane to northern Queensland ever since. A raucous documentary featuring passionate testimonials from both pro- and anti-toad Aussies as well as a number of amazing staged sequences in which the toads wreak havoc on unsuspecting Australians, CANE TOADS is a hugely entertaining and fascinating film.
