Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Mark Eitzel, leader of the on-again, off-again American Music Club, comes forth with another album of artfully sarcastic but heartfelt observations on life, love, and American society. CANDY ASS can sound both lush and eerily stark as Eitzel's slightly parched, unaffected voice spins tales of mortality ("Song of the Mole"), the cost of love ("Sleeping Beauty"), and angst in general ("My Pet Rat St. Michael"), bordered by surreal, Brian Eno-like instrumentals ("Cobh").
