Publisher's note

This groundbreaking biography of a brilliant but disturbed performer explores the paradox of the man and the artist. Based on more than 100 interviews, this intelligent profile explores Morrison's roots; the hard times he went through in London, New York, and Boston; the making of his seminal albums such as Moondance and Astral Weeks; and the disastrous business arrangements that left Morrison hungry and penniless while his songs were topping the charts. Detailed are the breakdown of Morrison's marriage, the creative drought that followed, and his triumphant reemergence. In addition, this biography attempts to explain the forbidding aspects of Morrison's persona, such as paranoia, hard drinking, misanthropy, as well as why, in the words of his onetime singing partner Linda Gail Lewis, Morrison's music ôbrings happiness to other people, not him.ö Also included is a Van Morrision sessionography that spans 1964 to 2001.

Annotation

CAN YOU FEEL THE SILENCE?, Clinton Heylin's combative yet impeccably researched biography of Van Morrison, takes us from the early days of his first band, the Monarchs, through the genesis of Them and Morrison's subsequent turbulent solo career. Though his subject is notoriously taciturn, Heylin does a fine job in gleaning information from a variety of sources well-placed to analyze the performer's motivation, and sympathetically recounts the variety of bad business deals that reduced Morrison almost to poverty during the late 1960s and early '70s, one of his most artistically fruitful periods. He also minutely researches the recording details of such seminal albums as ASTRAL WEEKS, with in-depth analysis of its songs. Morrison's contradictory personality, and a succession of lackluster albums during the late '70s, did little to endear him to his record-buying public, although there was a later resurgence of interest dating from the release of his album WAVELENGTH and other increasingly spiritually- and philosophically-oriented recordings. Ultimately, Heylin finds Morrison to be an artistically gifted curmudgeon, capable of creating the otherworldly beauty of albums like VEEDON FLEECE, but unable to relate in any meaningful way to the rest of the world.
