Gangsta rap, Oaktown style. And Dru Down raps about what seemingly every other West Coast rapper under the sun raps about: guns, "hos," drugs, and cruising the streets in search of various interactions with same. The song titles say it all: "Hustlin' Ain't No Thang," "The Game," "500 Mobsters." The obscenities fly incessantly, the language is raw, but the sound, in "tru" west Coast fashion, is slick, hyper-produced and full of various aural tricks and gimmicks.

Dru Down's saving grace is his good taste in backing tracks, and how to wrap them around his words. This disc is more musically complex than most, with some well-placed and occasionally melodic backup vocals layered atop the usual braggadocio. "Choppin' It Up," kind of a Beatles' "Day in the Life" Oaktown style, is a definite highlight--Dru drops a down-and-dirty, funky, skunky bass line, and proceeds to shred it with a few high-speed raps. The gansta/pimp flava of the '80s simply refuses to die.
