Harry Belafonte Artist Snapshot:

By mixing it with folk and pop, Harry Belafonte brought calypso music to a worldwide audience in the early 1960s, with huge hits like "The Banana Boat Song" and "Jamaica Farewell." He was the first solo artist to sell more than a million copies of a 33 RPM album, and in addition to his enormously successful recording career, Belafonte also found favor as an actor on stage and screen. Perhaps most importantly, throughout his life Belafonte has been a tireless political activist and spokesman for human rights, and has done as much as any entertainer to help make the world a better place, both with his music and his political efforts.

Belafonte's third and most successful chart album was full of the kind of folksy and calypso-style songs that made him one of the show business sensations of the late 1950s. Two of them, "The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)" and "Jamaica Farewell", were hit singles as well. The album itself spent 72 weeks in the US Top 40, 31 of them at #1, and made history by becoming the first 33 1/3 rpm LP by a solo artist to sell a million copies.
