Review

Rolling Stone (1/31/02, p.53) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...More songfula nd brisj than most stoner rock....But we're still talking about a monstrous rock & roll band here; Each track surfs on a vast groove..."
Q (2/02, p.107) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...This album rocks with evil intent..."
Alternative Press (3/02, p.78) - 7 out of 10 - "...Fu Manchu still rock, dude..."
NME (Magazine) (2/2/02, p.27) - 7 out of 10 - "...Brilliant...40 minutes of unwavering AC/DC-ZZ Top-Mudhoney chemical mutation rock called things like 'Ampn' and 'The Wasteoid'...They are the stoned Ramones, a matey Motorhead: a band who can rewrite that album into the infinite future and rule perpetually..."

Title Note

Fu Manchu includes: Scott Hill (vocals, guitar); Bob Balch (guitar); Brad Davis (bass); Brant Bjork (drums).

Recorded at Sound City, Van Nuys, California and Aftermath Studios, Los Angeles, California.

Formidable SoCal stoner rockers Fu Manchu sweetened the pot significantly on CALIFORNIA CROSSING. While their heavy grooves always owed something to the arena-filling radio rock of the '70s, they never had as much streamlined power-pop appeal as they do here. The epic title track is a sun-drenched anthem to their home state, and Venice name-checking "Downtown in Dogtown" swings fast and loose like the legendary skateboard crew it shares a name with. CALIFORNIA CROSSING is retro to be sure, but when almost no one else is doing something, it's refreshing to hear it spun a new way.
