Review

CMJ (p.37) - "Yasi Perera adds vocals for the psychedelia oddity of 'Invisible String,' [and] chamber-pop specialist Nedelle contributes harmonies to sweeten the mix..."

Title Note

The Curtains: Chris Cohen (vocals, guitar, piano, synthesizer, electric bass, drums).

Signing to Sufjan Stevens's label for their fourth full-length album, the Curtains released their most accessible and melodic album yet with CALAMITY. Unlike the Curtains' previous albums, CALAMITY is essentially a solo album by bandleader and sole original member Chris Cohen, with help from new guitarist and singer Nedelle Torrisi (formerly a solo artist herself). At times simply pretty and melodic, CALAMITY follows the same tendency toward calmer tunes and less complex arrangements that Cohen's former band Deerhoof has also been moving toward. Increasingly straightforward but still enjoyably odd and occasionally abrasive, CALAMITY is the Curtains' finest yet.
