BYE BYE BIRDIE! transcended its potentially dated subject--the induction of an Elvis-like rock singer, Conrad Birdie, into the Army--with a clever, satirical script and some truly outstanding songs, particularly the enormous hit (and eventual standard) "Put On A Happy Face," sung by Dick Van Dyke, and the comic masterpiece "Kids," which made Paul Lynde an instantly recognizable star.
