Azymuth Artist Snapshot:

In the early 1970s, when the American and European jazz scenes were on fire with fusion, in Brazil there was a similar phenomenon. The trio Azymuth--Jose Roberto Bertrami, keyboards; Alex Malheiros, bass; and Ivan Conti, drums--formed in 1971, combining the pop and folk styles of their homeland with electrified jazz and funk. All three members were well-established session musicians, in part inspired by the success of fellow Brazilians Flora Purim and Airto Moreira. They went on to balance individual careers with Azymuth, continuing into the '90s and beyond.

Brazilian trio Azymuth had been blending forward-thinking post-bop, funk, and samba for 35 years before 2008's BUTTERFLY was released, and the album stands as a testament to the group's time-honed mastery of their sound. The album opens with a cover of Herbie Hancock's "Butterfly" and moves through 10 tunes that veer between fiercely bouncing funk grooves and cool-toned samba rhythms, with both styles executed so seamlessly it seems they've always gone together. On paper it sounds like BUTTERFLY looks to the past, but the sheer popping energy of the album keeps it remarkably fresh, vital, and primed for repeat play.
