Butter 08 is an all-star lineup of indie rockers from Cibo Matto, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and Skeleton Key. The first album from this alternative supergroup, BUTTER, culls from the diverse talents of its various members and has a sound that's as unique as it is unified. For the most part, kitsch is the name of the game here, straddling the categories of loungecore, punk, and rap with great ease; the recording sessions must have been a blast.

Highlights include the angry white girl metal rap "9mm," a snickering poke at nostalgia in "Butter of 69," and "How Do I Relax," already a loungecore classic, complete with swirling organs, a bossa nova chorus, and eerily distorted vocal samples. "Mono Lisa" betrays the same lo-fi leanings that characterize the recordings of the Blues Explosion, benefiting from both Russell Simins excellent and frenzied guitar work and sensual vocals from Cibo Matto's Yuka Honda, who's sexy even (especially?) when she shrieks. Butter 08 is a natural team.
