Matt Johnson released BURNING BLUE SOUL in 1981 under his own name. It clearly stated the themes that would preoccupy him throughout his career and, in 1999, it was reissued as a The The album. Apart from some minor help from Wire's Bruce Gilbert and Graham Lewis, Johnson recorded the album alone, lyrically and musically exploring topics like isolation, loss, fear, and regret. Using everything from drum machines and tape loops to brittle, echoing guitars and a variety of vocal effects, he created a solid foundation from which to build an alienated, but very human, sound.

Though the album features a lot of electronics (especially for 1980), it doesn't suffer from the dated sound that mars much early '80s electronic music. Highlights include the grim, clanging instrumental "Red Cinders in the Sand," and the desperate "Bugle Boy," which evokes THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD-era David Bowie. The disorienting "The River Flows East in Spring," complete with sampled native chanting, sounds a bit like a jug-band with industrial pretensions, while "Another Boy Drowning" ranks among Johnson's best, featuring a watery, radiating guitar, and suicide note lyrics. BURNING BLUE SOUL is vintage The The.
