Title Note

Various Artists: The Buford Majors Band, Doug Lane, Thomas Henry, Willie Gunn.

Run by the Nashville record executive W.C. "Red" Wortham, the Bullet and Sur-Speed labels, just two of the countless independent imprints that flourished in the mid 20th century, were scrappy, energetic outfits that would release any musical genre the public would buy, including country, gospel, and rock & roll. This fascinating retrospective of a bygone era of the music industry focuses on the labels' R&B and blues releases, with recordings by talented but obscure artists like the blues singer and harmonica player Shy Guy Douglas, the superlative R&B outfit the Buford Majors Band, and the Tempo Rhythms, whose wonderfully title "My Eyes Don't Have the Heart to Cry" is one of this collection's highlights.
