Mates Of State Artist Snapshot:

Jason Hammel and Kori Gardner have moved around from the Midwest to the West Coast to Connecticut, but they've brought both their romantic connection and affinity for shared harmonies wherever they go. Their 2000 debut, OUR CONSTANT CONCERN, was a fun, uptempo affair, anchored by keyboards, dual vocals, and peppy rhythms. But the ensuing eight years saw four more albums, each a bit more musically textured and lyrically complex than the next, the couple unafraid to expose their emotional ups and downs to whoever might be listening. Two critically acclaimed records, BRING IT BACK and RE-ARRANGE US, have both been released on Barsuk Records, and over the years they have toured with luminaries like the Strokes and been a regular on large summer festival bills.

On their fourth full-length, BRING IT BACK, husband-and-wife duo Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel continue the trend begun on their previous album, TEAM BOO, and push their glimmering synth-pop giddiness in a richer, more complex direction. Hammel's tasty drumming leads the way through the duo's increasingly sophisticated song structures, and Gardner's layered organ playing shows greater variety than before. The key elements that make Mates of State's music so infectious, however, still occupy the center ring: Gardner and Hammel playfully trading vocals back and forth, the sing-along melodies as catchy as TV theme songs, and the kind of gleeful energy usually found only on high school pep squads.
