Review

Rolling Stone (3/20/03, p.66) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Distinctly different songwriting styles mesh brilliantly here..."
Spin (5/03, p.112) - "...Forster and MacLennan value the direct: no distortion, low dynamics, keeping the singing like speaking. Their sound is round and lucid..."
Entertainment Weekly (2/21/03, p.150) - "...Smart, sitting-room songcraft barbed with bright guitars and marked by a familiar mix of wistful diary keepers, melancholy stage strutters, and fortune-tellers in denial..." - Rating: B+
Uncut (3/03, p.95) - 4 stars out of 5 - "....Reflective....Another treasure..." e

Title Note

The Go-Betweens: Robert Forster (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano, organ); Grant McLennan (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Glenn Thompson (electric guitar, organ, keyboards, drums, background vocals); Adele Pickvance (keyboards, bass, background vocals).

Recorded at Sing Sing Studios, Melbourne, Australia & Paradise Studio, Sydney, Australia in 2002.

Since circa 1976, the Australian-via-U.K. band the Go-Betweens have been crafting literate, witty, moody, and catchy guitar-driven indie pop-rock (occasionally recalling the best of Lou Reed and Elvis Costello). The excellent BRIGHT YELLOW BRIGHT ORANGE is from 2000, shortly after the band regrouped a couple of years previously.

Japanese edition with two bonus tracks ("Unfinished Business," "Girl Laying On The Beach").

Proof that the Go-Betweens' 2000 reunion album, THE FRIENDS OF RACHEL WORTH, was no fluke, BRIGHT YELLOW, BRIGHT ORANGE finds Robert Forster and Grant McLennan presenting a charming set that largely consists of laid-back, acoustic-oriented tunes. While the previous outing featured the revered Australian duo backed by members of Sleater-Kinney, this record sees the Go-Betweens gelling into a stable line-up rounded out by bassist Adele Pickvance (who appeared on some of RACHEL WORTH's tracks) and drummer Glenn Thompson. Although BRIGHT YELLOW may seem unassuming at first, repeated listens reveal a beautifully assured collection of indie-pop songs that includes the vibrant "Caroline and I," the subdued "In Her Diary" (sort of an "Eleanor Rigby" for the Sub Pop set), the lively "Old Mexico," and the gorgeously melancholy closer, "Unfinished Business."
