Though the term "metalcore" gets thrown around pretty liberally these days, Syracuse's staunchly animal rights-focused Earth Crisis were truly one of the most successful metal/hardcore fusionists. Their 1998 album, BREED THE KILLERS, represented a middle ground between the hotshot, groove-intensive heaviness of Pantera or Slayer and the righteous fury of late-'80s New York hardcore. Singer Karl Buechner's death-metal growl complements the band's steamrolling, incalculably heavy sound. Worthy of note, of course, are the lyrics, which lay down a militant and vegan agenda in no uncertain terms. However unsubtle, the message doesn't detract from the music.
