Title Note

The Great Divide: Mike McClure, Scott Lester (vocals, guitar); J.J. Lester (drums, percussion); Kelley Green (bass, background vocals).

Additional personnel includes: Jimmy LaFave (vocals); Lloyd Maines (pedal steel guitar, lap steel, 12-string electric guitar, guitar); Gene Elders (fiddle); Michael Samuels (harmonica); Stewart Cochran (organ).

Recorded at Cedar Creek Studios, Austin, Texas.

Although the Great Divide hail from Garth Brooks territory--Stillwater, Oklahoma--their sound is far removed from the G-man's version of country music. The quartet's major label debut is a warm, organic- sounding record punctuated with tasty acoustic guitar solos, fiddle, steel and harmonica. But the element that makes the band unique is one the Beatles figured out long ago: two lead singers are more interesting than one.

Main vocalist/lead guitarist Mike McClure has a gritty, strained, Steve Earle-ish voice, which is shown off to full effect on edgy story songs ("Billy Covington") and soulful numbers ("Break In the Storm"). Rhythm guitarist/vocalist Scotte Lester, who has a smoother, deeper voice, handles straight ahead country fare ( "Heart of Stone," "Out of Love" ) and wistful nostalgia ("Dodgers Were In Brooklyn"). A highlight of the album is "Used to Be," a rockin' number which pairs McClure with Austin music scene mainstay Jimmy LaFave. Great Divide don't sound quite like any other act on the charts these days, and since their sound encompasses the best elements of both country and rock, it's easy to see why the band prefers this simple label to describe their work: "American Music."
