Insanely prodigious German filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder directed over 40 films before his premature demise at 37. Although his entire output remains one of cinema's most influential bodies of work, his legacy can be most directly attributed to The BRD Trilogy (Bundesrepublik Deutschland)--THE MARRIAGE OF MARIA BRAUN, VERONIKA VOSS, and LOLA. In telling the tales of three dynamic women, Fassbinder also managed to paint a portrait of postwar Germany that was at once dynamic, thrilling, and deeply personal.
