Title Note

This CD chronicles much of Jorge Ben's best work. Most of the classics are here--"Que Pena," "Oba, La Vem Ela" and "Take it Easy My Brothers Charles"--although "Taj Mahal" is mysteriously absent. Jorge Ben (sometimes known as Jorge Benjor) represented the Rio de Janeiro wing of the Tropicalia movement of the late '60s, which included his distinguished colleagues Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, and Gilberto Gil.

Ben fuses African, soul and funk with samba and other elements of Brazilian music, at times sounding almost like a Brazilian Sly and the Family Stone. This collection is an excellent introduction to Jorge Ben's music; the majority of it is extremely funky and upbeat, while songs such as "Domingas" highlight his pre-Tropicalia samba beginnings.
