Though she served a long Nashville apprenticeship as a backup singer and successful songwriter, Jamie O'Neal eventually revealed her own powerful voice and garnered several of her own hits. With her second record, BRAVE, O'Neal delivers gusto-filled vocal performances matched to a set of heartland-rock-inspired songs full of evocative imagery. "Somebody's Hero" was inspired by the birth of her daughter and deals with the joy and heartache of watching a child grow up. "Devil on the Left" is a grinding swamp-rocker that examines a stripper's moral dilemma. The funky bass line and rebellious spirit of "Girlfriends" recalls Dolly Parton's 1980 mega-hit "9 to 5." With a gutsy vocal tone similar to that of Loretta Lynn, O'Neal delivers a high-energy album full of catchy tunes that are both passionately performed and vividly detailed.
