Title Note

Personnel: Mary McCaslin (vocals, guitar, banjo); Jim Ringer (vocals, guitar); Larry Blom (vocals, dobro); Ken Bloom (acoustic guitar, Northumbrian small pipes, arp); Dick Fegy (electric guitar); Winnie Winston (pedal steel); Jay Ungar (mandolin, fiddle, synthesizer); Tony Markellis (bass); Billy Mundi, Steve Mosley (drums, percussion).

Recorded at Earth Audio Techniques, Vermont from September 1977-March 1978. Includes liner notes by Mitch Greenhill.

Singer/guitarist Mary McCaslin was indeed ahead of her time. McCaslin began recording in 1969, and her style drew equally on folk, country, and rock (with a touch of pop), long before such a style became commercially viable (perhaps she inadvertently paved the way for singers such as Nanci Griffith and Mary Chapin Carpenter). She was married for a time to the late Jim Ringer, one of the few remaining of the breed known as The Wandering Folksinger.

In 1978 they recorded THE BRAMBLE & THE ROAD, a long-out-of-print gem of folk and country classics. The songs may be familiar but the combination of voices (hers high and sweet, his slightly coarse with a bit of a drawl) and the straightforward yet inspired arrangements imbue these versions with a wry, spirited charm. Ray Charles' "Hit The Road, Jack" becomes a country-tinged British Isles folk tune. "Strawberry Roan" takes you out to the wide open Western spaces and "Rank Strangers" alternates a spare bluegrass gospel approach with a punchy, moving, more "produced"-sounding chorus. BRAMBLE is a minor classic of American roots music.
