In his recording of Brahms' 'Hungarian Dances,' Ivan Fischer highlights the connection between the composition on paper and the still vibrant gypsy improvisational tradition. With the Budapest Festival Orchestra, Fischer celebrates the vibrancy of Brahms' music while rearranging some sections to bring it closer to the source of its inspiration.

Fischer's new arrangements bring out an intimate side of the music, milar to the gypsy bands of old. Naturally, a full orchestra sounds different than a small band, but the feeling is there. They play with the intensity and joy that are the mark of a good dance.

In addition to providing animated performances, the album boasts extensive notes about the origins of each of the dances, including information about the original gypsy music for the ethnomusicologist in every music fan.
