Dirty Linen (p.79) - "[A] rollicking two-CD set of country rockers and cover tunes that would probably bring a smile to Gram Parsons and Johnny Cash. The musicianship is stellar, the band is tight..."

Title Note

The Boxmasters is a band fronted by Billy Bob Thornton, the actor and musician whose solo career has tended towards a Tom Waits-like blues and country feel. From the matching suits on the cover to the tight songs contained within these two discs, THE BOXMASTERS finds Thornton reaching back to the 1960s beat groups, along the lines of the early Who, Rolling Stones, and Pretty Things. Adapting blues and country music to electric rock ends, THE BOXMASTERS also features a second disc of vintage covers including Michael Nesmith's "Some of Shelley's Blues" and "Propinquity," and the Who's "The Kids Are Alright."

Album Review

WHAT do you get when you take the influence of the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Kinks and the Animals and then combine them with Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Roy Acuff and Hank Williams? It could only be The Boxmasters. Fashioned after a 1960’s-era mod band, The Boxmasters were founded by W.R. ‘Bud’ Thornton and GRAMMY winning engineer/guitarist J.D. Andrew. “Electric Hillbilly music is probably the best description of The Boxmasters. But the real idea behind The Boxmasters was both musically and in live performance, it was like watching a combination of 60’s television shows like Dean Martin, Johnny Cash Show, all those variety shows, with electric hillbilly music - it’s a great blend.”—BILLY BOB THORNTONMusician and songwriter extraordinaire, Thornton continues to forge a prolific musical path. His previous solo albums include Beautiful Door, Hobo, Edge of The World and Private Radio. He has also performed on numerous recordings such as Warren Zevon’s GRAMMY winning album The Wind, the legendary Earl Scruggs’, Earl Scruggs and Friends and Anchored In Love: A Tribute to June Carter Cash.THE BOXMASTERS ARE W.R. ‘Bud’ Thornton: Lead Vocals, Background Vocals, DrumsJ.D. I caught Billy Bob Thorntons group on CBSs Craig Kilbourne show -- and they are terrific. An authentic sound thats sure to create its own niche.
