Review

Down Beat (p.76) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[A] series of multi-genre transatlantic conversations between paired improvisers against continually changing backdrops....This record, like its companion, goes a long way toward reconciling contemporary jazz and classical music without selling either short."
JazzTimes (p.68) - "Residing somewhere between chamber music and improvised structures, BOUSTROPHEDON offers a different view of Parker's immense talent."

Title Note

Evan Parker: Evan Parker (soprano saxophone).

Recording information: Muffethalle, Munich, Germany (2004).

Saxophonist/composer Evan Parker is known primarily for his free jazz improvisations, but the music on BOUSTROPHEDON sounds more structured, and more in line with classical chamber music, than anything he's done before. Here Parker teams with Chicago free jazz legend Roscoe Mitchell and a 14-piece orchestra to perform the album-length piece, which is arranged in six movements (or, as Parker terms them, "furrows"). The music, composed in part by chance strategies, features ascending and descending lines that create overlapping patterns that are then interspersed with improvisation from the ensemble. None of this sounds random or scattered, however, and the result is some of the compelling music of Parker's career.
