Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon is an underrated branch on rock & roll's family tree. In the fallow period of the late 1950s/early '60s, when prefab teen idols ruled and history would have you believe everyone else was sitting around waiting for the Beatles to revive rock & roll, Cannon was pounding out (as per his nickname) vibrant, raucous tunes like "Tallahassee Lassie" and "Way Down Yonder In New Orleans." He brought a vitality to the charts that kept the spirit of early Elvis, Little Richard, et al. alive, and you can hear how it all went down on this definitive Cannon collection.
