BOOGIE WOOGIE ZYDECO is first-rate, party-ready contemporary zydeco. Frontman and accordionist Carrier, a veteran of Terence Simien's Mallet Playboys, has a pleasant vocal resemblance to Jimmy Cliff (albeit with an occasionally wayward sense of pitch), and he's as influenced by soul and blues as by traditional Creole music, as evidenced by the elegant '60s guitar work on "Be Fair to the People." Meanwhile, the Bayou Swamp Band clearly deserves its equal billing; the group's musicianship is impeccable, and whoever the uncredited drummer is, he kicks major derriere, particularly on the serious washboard workout "Hey Barbariba."
