Back in the 1960s, along with standard Latin music, the young guns were fired up by all manner of styles in New York, and that was reflected in the new "boogaloo" sound they were making. It was soul music, to all intents and purposes, but with a heavy Latin mood, making it ultra-rhythmic, and ready to jam at the drop of a dime. So you have something familiar as "Cool Jerk" heavily recast as a descarga by Kako, while the great Willie Rosario shows his chops on a pair of cuts. Plenty of big names joined the action -- Machito, Ray Barretto, Willie Bobo -- and there's no doubt that this style influenced the course of Latin music, while keeping the dancefloors packed. What's truly remarkable is that few of these cuts have been remastered and reissued before, since they're so explosive; like a slice of the '60s that bursts out of the New York blocks.
