Review

"Intelligent, exceptionally well written and showcasing a phenomenal [sic] strong female protagonist who embodies the complexities inherent in motherhood, this yarn is a must-read for the discerning steampunk fan." (starred review)

"Cherie has created a world filled with everything you'd expect in steampunk, and then some, but tempered it with horror, soldered it with love, and reinforced it with high adventure. In a way, it's steampunk at its most basic--appropriating the past and sewing it together into something new: a new vision--a brighter vision, perhaps, but a darn fine one."

"It's full of buckle and has swash to spare, and the characters are likable and the prose is fun. This is a hoot from start to finish, pure mad adventure."

Publisher's note

Commissioned to build a machine that will promote gold-rush land-breaking efforts between Civil War-era Seattle and Alaska, inventor Leviticus Blue inadvertently triggers the release of a deadly gas that transforms people into the living dead, a situation that prompts his teenage son to restore the family reputation years later. Original.

Original.

In the early days of the Civil War, rumors of gold in the frozen Klondike brought hordes of newcomers to the Pacific Northwest. Anxious to compete, Russian prospectors commissioned inventor Leviticus Blue to create a great machine that could mine through Alaska's ice. Thus was Dr. Blue's Incredible Bone-Shaking Drill Engine born.

But on its first test run the Boneshaker went terribly awry, destroying several blocks of downtown Seattle and unearthing a subterranean vein of blight gas that turned anyone who breathed it into the living dead.

Now it is sixteen years later, and a wall has been built to enclose the devastated and toxic city. Just beyond it lives Blue's widow, Briar Wilkes. Life is hard with a ruined reputation and a teenaged boy to support, but she and Ezekiel are managing. Until Ezekiel undertakes a secret crusade to rewrite history.

His quest will take him under the wall and into a city teeming with ravenous undead, air pirates, criminal overlords, and heavily armed refugees. And only Briar can bring him out alive.

Annotation

With this steampunk family drama, Cherie Priest applies all the atmospheric style, gritty glamour, and mechanical gadgetry that devotees adore about the steampunk aesthetic to a riveting action-packed story of motherhood, family bonds, and survival. Contracted by the Russians to build a machine to help mine for gold, mad-cap inventor Leviticus Blue produced Dr. Blue's Incredible Bone-Shaking Drill Engine. On its first spin out of the laboratory, however, the powerful engine dug so deep and so quick that it hit a pipeline of blight gas, a horrifying vapor that turns anyone who inhales it into a zombie. Now, 20 years later, Leviticus's son has returned to try to rectify the damage his father wrought, and his widow fights for her life--and her son's--amidst walking dead and evil power-brokering scientists.
